The Sunday Herald Sun yesterday ran the full page ad promoting newsagents. This is the second run they have given this ad. I hope newsagents are thanking their reps. I also hope that newsagents are making the most of this and playing the TVC in their shops and have placed the free A4 or A3 posters in their window.
Mark dont you think an increase in home delivery fees to say 55 cents per day per paper would be more benificial?

Andy there are complications around delivery fees and newsagent remuneration. Through supporting the ad campaign, News Ltd is able to get this done without complications and to support retail and home delivery.
I appreciate their support.

Andy, I know it’s not in the context of this post but I see your point. I don’t have a run so I don’t understand the payment structure but couldn’t you put a surcharge on deliveries?

MIchael, the publishers dictate what we are allowed to charge for delivery – it is a lot less than what it actually costs. Strangely enough, here in NSW not only is the cover price of the Telegraph less than the Herald Sun, the delivery fees we are allowed to charge are also less than in VIC.

I’m surprised it’s lasted for so many years not the HeraldSun but the delivery side of it. We used to get milk delivered years ago now and don’t miss it. By not having home deliveries we could draw more people into our stores.
I still think it’s excellent that the HWT have gone with the advertisment, I think more people than we know, know how valuable we are to a huge cross section of the community.

Andy,
If you stop delivery your fees go to 12% BUT they no longer can dictate to you where the papers go in your store!

Andy,
I see the home delivery challenges as being different to what we are achieving with this ad campaign.
People have bought newsagencies knowing the conditions and revenue model.

Here is the responce that we received today for our delivery increase in SA! what hope have we got!!!!!!
Dear ANF member,
As most of you are aware, for some months now the ANF S.A ‘Scope of Depot’ Committee (John Fitzpatrick, Neville Thorp & Don Lewis and myself) have been working closely with Adam from News Ltd on an increase for Distribution N/A’s. The ANF produced a ‘model’ and passed it onto News Ltd after receiving data from N/A’s on the ever increasing costs within their businesses. ANPL responded with their own model and data to compare to the ANF information to highlight the potential increase.
Unfortunately after meetings with Michael Miller and Adam Everett and an original positive response from News Ltd of a possible increase, the ANF have recently been informed that there will be no increase in 2008 for Distribution N/A’s in South Australia.
The S.A ANF objected to the fact that with further increases in petrol, Award increases, insurance etc. that at least a CPI increase should be passed onto N/A’s who have only had an proportional increase in July 2007 to cover the Transport Workers Award changes with no “buffer” for the future included. I also communicated to Adam (ANPL) that some Regional N/A’s may not be happy to continue their Distribution rounds with many losing money from the kilometers travelled to newspapers delivered, and spiraling costs associated.
The S.A ANF are disappointed by ANPL’s decision to decline the increase and will continue to work towards improving this situation in the future.
I thank all N/A’s concerned for their efforts in providing time, information, and patience involved in this process.
Regards
Colin Shipton

Fuel levy request for South Australian Newsagents
Colin,
Thank you for your recent submission and analysis requesting the implementation of a fuel levy for South Australian Distribution Newsagents.
In light of the recent economic downturn and the negative impact this is already having on reader and consumer discretionary spend and newspaper sales it is our view that the market cannot currently sustain any further increase to the cost of newspaper subscriptions without significant loss of business.
ANPL sympathises that the cost of doing business is becoming more challenging and is forcing all businesses regardless of size to continuously review their operating systems and processes and implement necessary change.
ANPL is committed to and will continue to work with the ANF to further identify and implement operational efficiencies within our combined operations for the benefit of South Australian Distribution Newsagents.
As you are aware a number of successes have already been jointly achieved in this area and it is extremely important we continue with this work.
Yours sincerely,
Adam Everett
Circulation Director
