This range of Nici pencil cases makes for a nice statement in-store, a welcome change from the traditional stationery offering. It shows that we are playing beyond the usual tartan pencil cases. They certainly appeal to a younger demographic – this is why we have them displayed at an aisle end. Smiggle has done a great job showing that stationery can be fun – especially to new consumers in the 8 to 15 age range. Newsagents need to play in the space and offer fun stationery too – before we lose the opportunity altogether. Australia Post has Smiggle in its corporate stores.
You might be hard pressed to find (depending on the demographic) a child/teen with a tarta pencil case. They are an extreme example of outdated stationery.
Love these pencil cases – got them in a few months ago. We sold half our order in one week – not bad for a non BTS period.
We are finding that fun and funky stationery is loved by more than just the child/tween/teen market. Everyone from kids to mothers to uni students to grandparents appear to prefer fun stationery – and they are willing to pay more for it.

I agree Jarryd, we sell more bright coloured folders than the traditional blue/red/black.
We’re constantly looking for the “new” in thing product. We’ve found it’s loved by all age groups. Goodbye Tartan!

Andrae,
I am under the impression that Smiggle only supply to their own stores and Aust Post. But don’t quote me on that.

Michael,
Intersting you note folders. We only recently introduced the “swirl” patterned range (Beautone) and can’t get enough of them. They retail at close to double that of the standard solid colour folders, but the price doesn’t appear to be a barrier at all.
Our two largest selling solid colours are by far purple and pink (by a substantial margin).
We like to apply a general rule to stationery – if its bright, it sells.

Jarryd is right Smiggles supply Australia Post only along with their own stores. We looked into having their product in our store but hit a brick wall.

Sean,
Nici is a range from Jasnor Australia, a predominantly gift/plush toy supplier. Check out http://www.jasnor.com.au
