The shredders we brought in for Father’s Day (as part of the newsXpress offer) have sold easily, more easily than we expected. With stories about identity theft in the media, I guess it is no wonder people are happy to buy some protection. There is enough interest for newsagents to carry two or three models of shredders – to satisfy personal and small business needs. Shredders are a logical extension to the usual newsagent stationery offering – play in that space and you soon see more opportunities.
We also noticed this last year, we always have a shredder on hand, now we also carry laminators and binding machines. Pitywe can’t source cheap printers.

Shredders and laminators tend to be things often ignored by a lot of the big electrical chains (except officeworks for shredders), so it makes sense that newsagents can get this market quite easily. That Safeguard one also does credit cards which would always catch a customers eye, as a lot of the cheaper ones don’t. I don’t believe printers would work as well due to range/room issues, and the margins are pretty thin even for electrical retailers, although saying that a local NewsXpress somehow sourced a few printers for fathers day the last time I went past. Make sure you sell the pockets for the laminators too (A4 and A5, as well as reposition-able ones), I’m sure that would assist in getting customers back.

Nacoob,
Lamination products move quickly through my store. I just want the printers, thin margin and all, just to reinforce my ink sales. Which newsXpress was it?
Cheers

Nahcoob,
Thanks, yes we sell lots of lamination product as well, also binding product too. I want the printers to bolster the ink sales to another level, can’t have a printer without ink! Which newsXpress was it? I’ll give them a call.
Cheers

Brett,
It was the NewsXpress in the Ocean Keys Shopping Centre in Clarkson, WA. Noticed it over the fathers day period.. a really basic HP model, printer only (not a multifunction). They had a few when I walked past their a few days in a row.
