The newsagency I blogged about a year ago – reporting that they often closed early – is closed for a week. The sign says it is closed due to family circumstances. With the number of relieving newsagents available, this newsagency does not have to close, especially on this busy street. It makes all newsagents look bad.
Cripes wish i could do that. A week off is just the thing i need.

This agent is possibly like us and I suspect many others. We can barely pay ourselves a wage let alone have money to pay a relieving newsagent. Nor have we had a holiday together for 8 years. We have had two weekends off together in 8 years. When I had a heart attach at work people complained about the shop being closed for half a day. Perhaps its time you stopped and asked ,” Can I help” your fellow newagent. I don’t think we work together and support one another enough in this business. This site is my only avenue of knowing whats happening in the industry why is’nt our fragmented associations running a similar site so we can relate our problems and get collective feed back and help for those who need it.

Is there a relief newsagent out there that will work a 73 hr week, if so great, we will take a holiday. I don’t think we are alone here. Maybe closing for a week will give the people the relaxation they need to stay in this stressful industry. Good luck to them. We close 1/2 day sundays and we cop all sorts of grief from people who demand their sunday papers after noon.

I am closed all day Sunday every week. Customers understand that we choose to have one day per week with our families.
Like most I am stressed with wage bills rent and loans so the luxury of having satff run the shop for us is years away.

it doesn’t matter what time you open or close, there will always be a small percentage of the public who will want to vent their spleen – it is an occupational hazard

Where is the ‘fun’ factor in this business ?
I read most operators are either… not making enough, too stressful, not supported by Tatts, not enough time to take a small holiday, being squizzed by their landlords, not supported by their suppliers, working longer then expected hours etc.. etc
It doesn’t sounds like a lot of fun !
My wife and I are looking to get into this game but then again I wonder if we’re making the right choice.

Bill,
There is plently of fun in this business. Retail is a reasonbly demanding and often ruthless game, but thats why some of us love it.
Its fun if you want it to be. An open mindset is the key.

Bill, I’m a Jack of all trades and have been in this for a year. There’s heaps of ups and downs and not really heaps of highs.
But there is a HEAP of job satisfaction in helping people, getting ideas and applying them and having them be successful. This makes it worth it to me.
My advice is be careful with what you buy. I looked at quite a few before I purchased mine at huge expense seeing I was looking interstate. One year on it’s worth it.
Good Luck Bill
P.S You have to put up with dickheads like anon above quite a bit, but you’ll be right!!!

As with all things, there are certainly ups and downs.
doesn’t matter what type of job you are in, you take in the bad with the good.
I guess it’s when you cannot take in the bad with that particular job, you move on and do something else.
If you want to become a newsagent, you definitely have to consider very carefully this decision.
unless you have someone else to work or takeover when you are not there, you are pretty much tied to the shop.
