Lazy browsing

hiding_mags.JPGI encourage people to browse magazines, no matter how long they spend reading. My only (mild) frustration is when they put the magazine on the shelf away from where they found it. The other day I found a copy of Muscle Car magazine between two stamp magazines. It is like they are ashamed to be seen reading the title and slink away to a corner, where our stamp magazines are located, for privacy. Maybe it’s not that, maybe it’s just laziness.

I get annoyed when they do that too, but probably more annoying for me is the licking fingers, then turning pages. I’ve been thinking about saying to the customer that you’ve bought it now or the last person that did that caught an infectious disease.

It’s just laziness, I think, since it happens with mags, cards, drinks, etc. But it sure does keep you on your toes. Lucky most newsagents know their stores well enough to spot the out-of-place items.

I’ve often wondered about the stance newsagents take on customers ‘browsing’ magazines. As a magazine-buying customer I hate the idea of paying full price for a wrinkled, thumbed-through magazine. I’d happily pay extra to get a plastic-bagged magazine in pristine condition. Or get it via subscription and not worry about the second-hand mags in the shop…
