We are debating whether to lose the bag rail at the counter when we do the shop fit at our Frankston newsagency. As the photo of the current counter shows, we use the bag rail for magazines. While watching customer behaviour confirms that this drives good impulse purchases, it is old school retail. But if it works well, why change? Our plan is to find a way to retail magazines at the counter but with a 2008 feel.
We will also ensure the new counter provides flexibility as this is key in the design of newsagencies today. No more old style fixturing which has one purpose only.
One thing about the bag rail is that it makes the counter wider, which can be good for security reasons. I must say your picture is not attractive, but then if it works to sell stuff that is the point.

Clem I agree it is not attractive. This is as it looks today, before we finalise our shopfit plans. Mark

we inherited a narrow bag rail that doesn’t really work, so customers just put their bag/purses on our confectionery which is the next level up.
so I try not to put fragile chocolate bars there.
Mark, with the magazines on the bag counter, do you still find people putting their bags on it anyway? so you’ll get crumpled mags left behind?
we also find that we have to be vigilant as well when they take their bought stuff that they do not take extra “away”. It’s happened a few times.
That’s why in future if I do a refit, I’ll probably leave that cashier till spot as a blank space or maybe as a security glass counter spot storing higher valued goods that can still be seen but secured.

If you are spending money, a recessed counter face could be 1 option. Whatever you do I am sure it will be trailblazing. Good luck
