ANZ moves to protect its Bill Express network

The ANZ Bank is said to be shipping thousands of terminals to newsagents and other retailers in the wake of shutdown of the Bill Express network today. This is a late move by the bank which has watched as various players have chipped away at their merchant services footprint across the Bill Express network. I’m told the new terminals will start arriving today and and that the bank has waived the usual monthly fee for three months.

As announced to the ASX late yesterday, the ANZ has an interest in 13.2% of shares in Bill Express.

Meanwhile, OnQ, 37.62% shareholder in Bill Express has announced that it will make a statement to the market about its future today. I’d expect it to follow in the footsteps of Bill Express.

The other public company to watch is ETT. Bill Express owns 43.44% of shares in this business which is currently voluntarily suspended from trading.

you have a merchant agreement with ANZ, because your current eftpos terminal uses the billexpress equipment for it to work (which is most likely about to stop working) then anz have sent you a standalone eftpos terminal that does not require billexpress to operate. so that you can still conduct eftpos transactions

Someone was mentioning that the terminal rental was sold off ot another company so even if BE go under you would still need to possibly pay the rental is that true and who is the company?

Does anyone know how we can end the merchant agreement with ANZ?

I had a quick read of the document but could not see any mention of break fees.
However earlier blogs seem to indicate that there are.

if anyone has ended their agreement formally with ANZ without penalties, would appreciate info on how to do it.

within the next 3 months, anz is sure to send out new merchant agreements for you to sign, agreeing to the new terminal rental fees. (they said we have 3 months free rental, so i assume they will start charging us after that) when this new agreement arrives, just dont sign it.

    Thanks, Scott.

I am still interested in hearing from anyone who has cancelled their ANZ eftpos before yesterday.

I have received 2 cold calls from 2 different St George staff this morning about eftpos.

Guess they are trying to move in fast.
But we had ours (St Geo) just installed last week, so we are well ahead.
It’s so much quicker than DialT/ANZ and simpler to use.

we’re using dial-up as we had the extra phone line installed for BillExp before. But St Geo assured us that we’ll not be charged for each dial-up. we’ll see when our phone bill comes.

I tried to cancel the ANZ Eftpos 2 months ago but was told by them that I had to go through Bill Express as it was part of their contract.
As I already cancelled the BE contract I requested new facilities from ANZ but the rates were atrocious.
So I would think twice before installing the terminal they just sent out.

Helen I Spoke to ANZ yesterday they advised me that sending out new EFTPOS terminals. I advise then that I was considering St George offer and asked what cancellation fee I would incur. He advised there would be no fee or penalty. Thanked him for his assistance & asked to cancel my service & not to send the replacement EFTPOS terminal. Therefore taken up St George offer. Toll delivered the ANZ EFTPOS today so didn’t sign or open it just sent it back.

Roop, You need to ask ePay which supplies Touch which supplies suncorp and eziPass. ePay decides the platforms on which Optus and Voda can be sold. We sell other product provided by ePay though Touch.

oh well, decided to face the dragon so to speak, ie call up ANZ merchant facilities to find out about cancelling the eftpos connected with Bill Exp.

The ANZ service person say no cancellation fees as such and they will cancel the replacement terminal to be sent out. If however not on time, then to refuse to accept the package from the courier.

We spoke to Suncorp about EFTPOS/Phone card system (we are using POS Solutions POS) and they have a great deal on their EFTPOS rates, but as yet, their systems don’t carry phone recharge. I tried calling Touch, but didn’t have the patience between customers to wait on hold. We are one of the crazy newsagents with little forethought or research time, and we signed for the ANZ replacement EFTPOS terminal. Where we go from here is something we will just have to deal with.

    Gail,

We’ve taken them off show (seeing they can’t be charged now).

    Another facet of this shambles.

    Michael,

There must be another way of selling them, Aust Post have them, they weren’t a bad seller. I’ve tried googling Gifts Cards, but haven’t come up with anything yet.
