Oh well, Powerball went off. First division reached $58 million. That’s some prize. next week it will be winter between-season retail as usual. While the OzLotto lottery has jackpotted to $13 million, it’s not enought to generate much interest.
The extra $9 million dollars added to the first division would have had more positive results if Tattersalls had decided to filter it down to the smaller prizes. Whilst consumers want the BIG prizes, 50 million is HUGE. So why not support the customers that support Tattersalls and give something back to the ‘die hard’ punters?. I feel Tatts is a little out of tune with what consumers want.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that the extra is handed out accorinding to the Powerball game rules. Powerball is designed to give bigger prizes with less winners. There are other games that fill the consumer demand you describe.

Jarryd,
You may be right; however based on what my customers are telling me, they would like the extra monies distributed to the smaller prizes. Not one customer i have spoken to supported the extra 9 million dollars added to first prize, they didn’t need prompting to discuss this issue either; 50 million is big enough.

50M may be big enough but the Jackpot is not always 50M. I haven’t heard one customer complain about the extra 8M for the winner. In my experience the people who play powerball understand that it is designed to give fewer but bigger prizes – this is the very reason many play it. They have chosen powerball as an alternative to games such as Saturday Lotto which gives more prizes that are worth less. I suspect many of the customer complaining are one-off players because of the jackpot.

Vaughan, if your customers are the winners of that $58 million dollars will they still tell you that the $9 million dollars should be distributed to the smaller prizes ? It is the ‘sour grape’ mentality. I definitely think that the winners won the jackpot fair and square.

Bario;
No, my customers would not give the 9 million back, that is not the point they were making. Simply, Powerball was advertised at 50 million, that is what the winners were expecting. Don’t you think it would drive more players to Powerball if the excess was distributed to all other prizes? It has nothing to do with ‘sour grapes mantality’, whatever that means, it was general discussion, nor did i mention anything about them not winning fairly and squarely.
