Tattersalls kiosk closure hurts

The Tattersalls kiosk outside our Frankston newsagency was closed yesterday when the rest of the centre was open from 1pm.  Their closure was odd because of the $40 million OzLotto Jackpot.  They would have done well.  Instead, their closure meant people walked to the lottery outlet on the other side of the centre – this happens to also be a newsagency.   We rely on the Tattersalls kiosk as much as they rely on us.  Their closure, again, let us down.

We are a newsagency with Tattslotto in a small shopping strip . We opened yesterday, while most outlets in our area closed. Our Tattslotto sales were about 2/3rds of a normal Friday’s trade, however importantly we sold 16 shares in our syndicates for Super 7’s. Some of these shares would have been bought at other outlets instead if they had of been open.

It was definitely worth opening, although the day off would have been good.

Our Tattslotto sales for the week are already 10% up compared to average, by the end of the day I expect it to be at least 25% above average.

I think that when there is a big jackpot like we have at the moment, it is important to open as many hours as customers are willing to come through the door. We always open on Sunday’s and public holidays until at least 12pm, and we are growing our sales as a result.

Thanks for the comment Dean. I wish you owned the kiosk in our centre.

In a shopping centre, especially down lower traffic courts, we rely on each other. My newsagency relies on the lottery kiosk and they on us. This is why I’m frustrated.
