The brochure on the left has been pushed out far and wide by Australia Post. It makes the Post Office look like a phone retailer which they are in some locations. What is it with this government enterprise? Are they not happy with their postal service monopoly to the extent that they have to continue to take on small business. There are franchisees and independent small retailers across the country offering phones and related product. If there was a hole in coverage I’d understand but there isn’t. Australia Post’s government owned stores ought to get back to their roots and stop using their protection to hurt small businesses.
Last thursday Aust Post flexed its monopoly on postage in Lismore when we tried to update our postpoint agreement. We were told that there were too meny retailers in our town so we could no longer sell stamps, end of discussion.
I’d love to be able to say to supermarkets, petrol stations sorry too many magazine retailers in town, no more supply for you. Deregulation is a good thing “IF” it is fair.
Poor Aust post must be doing it tuff, but as usual small business operator’s get shafted again.
What the government seems to miss is that without small business there are no jobs for the workers they say they are supporting

Mark,
When you talk about the monopoly that Australia Post has I am assuming you mean on small letters up to 250 grams, after all, this is the only postage monopoly Australia Post holds.
Australia Post is GBE and like any GBE it has to meet its CSO’s, so unless it expands into other markets, which makes commercial sense to any business large or small, we would not enjoy the market stability of the postage prices we have today. End of story.

Rowan,
Australia Post, the entire mail service and the retail network, has been built under the protection of a monopoly. Today’s business trades off this.
Of more concern is the government owned retail outlets. The Government should not own and run businesses which compete with “working families”.
