Tradie – free magazine for tradesmen

MediaWeek reports that the team behind Men’s Journal has launched Tradie, a magazine aimed at tradesmen who work on building sites on the east coast of Australia. The print run is over 50,000 with copies being distributed through Mitre-10 stores and direct to building sites. From what I can find out online – through MySpace entries and other forums – Tradie is in the same genre as Zoo Weekly, Picture and People but from a tradesman’s perspective.

I’m a tradie – but ashamed to use the title after seeing that trashy bogan bikini tart mag. I also teach trades at TAFE and will be requesting my apprentices boycott the mag & products it advertises.

Karen you are a tradie at what?? Another stupid women with nothing better to do. I have been working for Mitre 10 for 17 years and you have no idea what REAL tradies want.
Go back to the kitchen darling.

Raymond is not only offensive but also possibly American as they are the only ones I have seen consistently spell woman as “women”. Maybe it was just a typo but if not his claim to working for Mitre 10 for 17 years could also be questioned.

Redneck – sorry, it’s Raymond isn’t it – why do you and your type have to pollute every on-line discussion you can find.

Your comment is not only offensive, it’s an insult best reserved for the barbaric places your kind normally haunt.

As for being an American – I doubt it. Obnoxious as they can be at times, none I know are as cheap as you. You win 1st, 2nd & 3rd prize for provocative, obnoxious crap – crawl back under your rock spider.

I am a 25 y/o tradesman and I love the tradie mag. It is full of tools and tradie info. It shows no more bare skin than the “inside sport” mag.( girls in a bikini is not sexist or trashy). I see more nudity in my girlfriends “cleo” mag. I am glad there is a mag out for trades people. I don’t want to read about finance, investment, get rich quick, and investment property mags!

Tradies are now about to have their own radio show every morning on 2RPH 1224 on the am dial
Tradies Radio Show 5.30am Mon – Fri starting on 5th Nov.

Is there a website for the Tradie Magazine?
The radio show sounds interesting but it runs on Sydney’s Radio Reading Service – is the perception that tradies cannot read? Will they read the Tradie Magazine?
What other sources of information do tradies use? (online, print, tv, radio)

Raymond. 17 years at Mitre 10. You are my hero… Too bad they don’t provide grammar and spelling classes at Mitre 10. My bet is that Karen is more intelligent and successful than you will ever be.

I have a question for tradies out there who like to see girls in the Tradie mag- Is there a particular look you like? sexy, sporty, work gear and clothing? hair colour specific? olive, dark or light skin? any info would be nice 🙂

Hi there. We love the mag. Always go into Mitre 10 to pick it up without fail. I have every issue. Nice to see that people know the Aussie tradesmen – sure we are clever but we also like to take the piss. This is the reality of it. ANyone who thinks otherwise has never set foot on a jobsite.

Hey guys im a former tradie girl handing out magazines in inner Melbourne and Geelong I think Raymond is a sexist PIG!!! And just to lighten the situation a little… having girls in trade magazines draws attention to their main sponsors with the majority of tradies being male that’s the way it is but it has also backfired as I know a fair few companies will not advertise in the tradie mag because of the girls. The girls I think are important to the magazine and besides they are contracted through a modeling agency anyway so I think they are here to stay… sorry

    Take care Xx

I like a good looking girl as much as the next man, but isn’t the ‘girl in a bikini with a nailbag on and holding a big drill’ a bit lame? I reckon it’s just old and tired. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have a bit of a look, though….

Tradie girl called into see us onsite in Doveton today. She was decked out in Yakka gear and looked every bit as hot as Jennifer Hawkins.

Posed for a pic with us and gave away some Yakka pants and magazines.
A little ray of sunshine on a dreary day for us oin the job.

This magazine has had it’s day the concept is gone, and I will not read this trash again. It started of OK, but never got to the ‘great’ stage. I hate getting this FREE magazine- and our company also likes to boycott the advertisers as they obviously find this magazine a hit- sorry advertisers- but my company of 75 workers, and me as the boss have stopped purchasing your products as the mag degrades what we are about

HI all, looking for the tradie mag website – anyone know? The great stage Johnno? What the? How much better could a mag be for tradies that is colourful and fun to read and chucks ya free Yakka pants and ginger beer by a cute chick who can even hold a conversation about tools. ANd seems interested!!! Whats your idea jonno? Better make your own magazine then and show them how its done if your so game. Tradies fans everywhere. Bring on the site – will there be a subscription through the web?

    gday to Liam (above)
the new tradies radio show ain’t too bad, some days are deadset diamonds and well, some days are dogs. It is very informative and good to hear a show that is PRO the tradies for a change. Their campaign to stop the term shonky builder being used by govt, getting them to use building impersonator is very funny and spot on. I agree, I think the tradies mag is bottom dwelling crap that does noone any favours. Most scientists are male but they don’t use tits to advertise the nobel prize do they!

Hello. I am a future Tradie model.
Been in discussions about shooting for the magazine soon.

I cannot believe that there are males on this page disgusted in the Tradie magazine. It is not degrading, offensive, trashy or any of that.

There are plenty more magazines out there that only have one theme. And that is women wearing next to nothing, and posing in raunchy positions, and talking about their sex lives.

But because that is what these magazines are all about you would buy it wouldnt you? So the point is not about women being degraded, it is about this specific magazine you believe would be better without the sex appeal?

I know some models who do that work and cannot understand my strong views against it.

But as for the Tradie Magazine. You guys need to chill out and be grateful that you’re receiving something for free in this world. And its all to benefit you.

You are a Tradie, you’re attracted to women, and its all in one magazine for you.

Grow up, or loosen up.. And enjoy the wonderful complimentary experience.

Men always invent things, or pioneer things that are dangerous and unknown. We tame the wilderness and make it safe, and then women want a part of it when its been made safe.

These days women want to be tradies, policemen, soldiers, etc.

They have no natural inclination to go out and build or fix things, but feminists keep telling them they have to do everything that men do.

Well, I’m sick of it. I’m sick of hearing about how 50% of policemen have to be women, how it’s a victory for equality whenever a woman wins the apprentice of the year award, how all these male-oriented occupations have to be taken over by women, and how we should all be happy about it.

I for one say, enough is enough. Back to the kitchen with ye, and make us a cup of tea.

I personally feel a bit ashamed by some of the filth being written on this blog. If women want to have their say on this magazine in a blog, then they shouldn’t be put down with sexist remarks. Perhaps we should be a bit constructive with our responses otherwise it merely backs up how bogan/primitive we really are.

In regards to the Tradie magazine, I personally find it offensive against us tradesmen. I’ve been in the building & construction industry for over 25 years and have been sick of the misconception that we are all un-educated labour workers. I like looking at women as much as the next bloke, however the articles and information in the magazine certainly showcase how little the publishers regard our intelligence. It uses woeful occa slang and constantly refers to tradies living at pubs.

I know the age-old argument “If you don’t like it, don’t read it”, and I appreciate that it is a free magazine. However, it is not a case of liking the content, it is a case of the material degrading our chosen profession which has taken so long to build to a respectable standard – as I said earlier, I’ve been in the industry for over 25 yrs and can’t stand the misconception that the public has of us.

I was listening to the “Tradies Radio Show” and heard about this other magazine thats in newagencies which I quite like. It’s called Building Contractor Magazine and has lots of great articles on building tips, timber, steel, business finance and marketing, as well as the latest industry info from government bodies. I was also impressed that the major manufacturers such as Hilti, Hitachi, Festool and DeWalt were advertising in it… Perhaps they share the same view as me which is why they’re not in the tradie. The only problem is that my newsagent doesnt always have a copy of the mag (either they dont stock it often or maybe there are others beating me to it)…. Hate having to subscribe, but seems like a worthy investment.

    just to reinforce your comment
(I love women and I married a beautiful one and we have been married nearly 30 years)
but this incessant need for some women to take over roles guts me.
I was a policeman for many years and loved it. This all changed in the late ’70’s when the equal opportunist maniacs decreed that women, pygmies, lesbian russian farm workers and any other title you can add can become police officers, the beginning of the end of that calling commenced. I can produce reams of anecdotal evidence of the inability of women to enforce law and order at the coal face – but hey don’t get me going – and get them off the work site they dont belong there either

I don’t care if women want to be tradies, they’re free to jump on board. We’re in a trades shortage anyway.

As for the whole ‘women dont belong on the construction site’, I dont see why not, as long as they can do the physical work.

That’s like saying we shouldn’t let Italians join the police force because they all belong to the mafia.

As for the mag, I do find it a bit trashy, but it is a consumer mag and all consumer mags have a bit of trash. Now if the mag was aimed at construction management or a real industry mag, then maybe it would be unprofessional.

    Hi Everyone

I was also thinking about being a model for the mag as I have modeling experience and work in the industry with mixing paint and selling other trade and building supplies. But i’m not sure about the swimmsuit I think a nice singlet short shorts a pair of red backs and a good quality drill fits the bill of the mag:0)

I’m all for that Carlyie. I;m a 24 year old carpenter and when I first saw the mag i grabed it thinking there could be alot of useful info to help me grow in my trade but what little info they did have through bikini girls was old news to me. dont get me wrong, i’m all for a bit of eye candy but to think thats what we need to grab the mag is an insult. Besides a girl in a mans uniform is much sexier, nothin like a girl wearin my clothes in the morning 🙂

Trevor; the mag is still going strong and can be found at trade retailers including a number of Mitre 10, Home Hardware and Total Tools stores. A big part of the distribution is directly to building sites and you can also find an online version of the latest issue at http://www.thetradie.com.au

Tradesman Insurance; I would be happy to talk you through advertising options to see if the magazine fits with your marketing plans. My contact details can be found at the above site.

I agree with the comments about much of the content in The Tradie. I find it insulting and degrading that the publishers treat us with such disregard… Tradies are not all stupid beer guzzling neanderthals who want to look at half naked women and read disgusting jokes.

Someone mentioned Building Contractor magazine earlier in the blog and I have to agree with them… This is a great rag. The same mob also publish What Tradies Want, a great read which I get free with Building Contractor.

Gotta love a democracy and freedom of choice…

    Hi there,

I am a student, and the internet never ceases to amaze me.

i am doing my homework and reading through these comment above, which have provided me with many examples of community attitudes.

there are those who are completely right wing, in saying that women should stay “in their kitchens” which is a reasonable projection of “fear of change”

and those who believe political correctness will combat the community issues such as discriminatory language and gender profiling.

as opinionated humans, individually we really dont make much of a difference in the overall scheme of magazine production.

however this is a free** magazine and many claim to have gained content from this magazine

its not like sexuality is “thrust” upon you within this magazine, you can choose to either accept or reject a stereotype*, and it basically takes 2 to tango (tango, in this analogy, refers to the act of being offended)

Therefore people, thanks you and good-day.

*the ambiguous use of the lexeme “stereotype” was deliberate implying both; woman’s image, and tradie intelligence does NOT have a single fitting human form.

    **nothing is ever free

    The Tradie magazine is crap.

The only reason people pick it up is because there are half naked chicks on the front. At the end of the day i have picked it up, but after a 30second flick through it goes straight in the bin.
The content is barron and to make things worse the chicks are putting more clothes on.

If you are a girl thinking of going in this mag it will seriously damage your modelling career, no self respecting company would give you a job if you pulled out a tradie magazine from your portfolio.

Less and less of my mates pick up the mag anymore and in all honesty I cant see it lasting much longer.
When it launched it was a good magazine but once the novelty wore off it has become something that I would’nt even consider wiping my arse with if I had run out of toilet toll.

This mag is ok for what it is… it’s just a freebe… it’s not something you would pay for. I pick it up, look at the chicks and it goes in the bin. What’s the big deal

Stumbled accross the blog… the Tradie mag is still kicking along but I don’t see it around nearly as much as I used to… I guess they are facing the same problem as Fairfax… advertisers arent paying as everyone is online. The only general tradie site that is online that I am aware of is http://www.toolstradestoys.com.au

If anyone knows any others i’d love to hear.
