Too much of a good thing

english-mags.JPGOutside of the usual English weeklies and monthlies I am surprised by the range of English garden and home magazines. While I have photographed three titles, we usually have between six and eight on the shelves at any one time.

Sales are barely okay. They would be stronger if we culled the range. For example, we really only need one English garden magazine, not two. Magazine distributors would not necessarily see this oversupply as they don’t take on board what the others are doing.

The sooner we have a magazine czar controlling the magazines which get access to the newsagents channel the better.

I don’t know where you’r coming from, yes distributors don’t know the full range we’re getting ‘cos each one only handles some of what we get, having a magazine czar would be bizarre, we really need another middleman like a hole in the head, lateral thinking talking with the Oz reps of the titles, might be easier to cull the range, no hassles with the distributors.

Stan, I am looking for a newsagent appointed person who approves all titles which make it into our channel. Mark

When you think about 4,600 newsagents with on average $25,000 invested in magazine stock at any one time, it’s a lot of money we have invested yet no one is managing access to our real estate asset. We need to control this.

Mark, i agree managing the bucks sure is top priority, i sussed that out way back, got it all down pat and she’s apples now, you have to do it yourself, no one else does it for you.

Nelson, I’ve not touched on who should pay. Not sure why you bring the taxpayer into this discussion. This has nothing to do with the taxpayer.

Newsagents have a wonderful asset in terms of their network and they need to manage that asset commercially. A magazine czar would be a good start.

Stan, Dictionary lookups can be fun and diverting. Newsagents need to manage their real estate / network asset by taking control over what titles have access. A czar, call him / her what you will – could be our best asset. Mark
